A backyard that
makes a statement
Over eight feet of elevation, reclaimed as a multi-tiered outdoor living space built into the natural slope.
change reclaimed
Where others saw an obstacle, we saw an opportunity.
At first glance, this backyard was a challenge most would walk away from. Over 8 feet of elevation change left the space steep, uneven, and completely unusable.
Working with the natural contours of the land instead of against them, we designed and built a multi-tiered outdoor living space that flows from one level to the next.
The result is a backyard that doesn't just function. It makes a statement.
From a steep, unusable slope to finished living space
The same view, before and after. Drag the handle across to see the change.
Before: over 8 feet of grade, steep and unusable. After: a level lawn up top, a paver patio and fire pit below, held by tiered walls and finished with plantings and lighting.
Designed for day and night
The finished front entry, the same frame from afternoon to after dark. Drag the handle across to watch the low-voltage lighting take over.
Day: the curved paver walkway, fresh beds, and cobblestone border. Night: uplighting on the trees and path lights guiding the walk.
The build, level by level
Four stages, each one setting up the next. Every paved surface sits on a compacted base, every wall backed with drainage stone.
Grade and retaining walls
The slope was cut and held with tiered segmental block, reinforced with geogrid and backed with drainage stone to manage water and load.
Natural stone steps
Solid stone slabs were set into the grade to connect the levels, giving the climb real weight underfoot.
Patio and fire pit
The lower level opened into a curved paver patio with a charcoal cobblestone border, built around a round stone fire pit and seat wall.
Planting and lighting
Hydrangeas, ornamental grasses, and evergreens softened the stonework, with low-voltage lighting tying every level together.
